Day and the Kansas Scholastic Press Association fall conference brought high school students to campus
JOURNALISM DAY FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS:
Fifty-five high school seniors attended journalism day Sept.
30 at the Kansas Union. Dean Ann Brill welcomed the students
and their parents and Janice Davis explained requirements.
A student panel discussed their work on student media and
their internship experiences. Following lunch the attendees
visited the School in groups led by journalism students. The
program is an annual event planned by the KU Office of Admissions
and the School recruiter.
KSPA FALL CONFERENCE:
More than 900 high school students from 54 schools and their
journalism teachers attended the Kansas Scholastic Press Association
Fall Conference Sept. 28 in the Kansas Union. Fifteen faculty
and staff of the School, and Kansan staff and multicultural
scholars made presentations. Jimmy Gentry and Peggy Kuhr led
interactive sessions on "Hurricane Katrina: Blogs, Citizen
Journalists and the Future of News." Other presenters
were Malcolm Gibson, headlines and cutlines; Kerry Benson,
writing critical reviews; Terry Bryant, creating an award-winning
broadcast entry; Staci Wolfe, putting broadcast news online;
Tim Bengtson, "Vitamins for the Creative Mind";
Carol Holstead, yearbook and magazine designs; Kara Lynch
yearbook design critiques; Doug Ward, "Fact-Checking
for Dummies"; Charles Marsh, Ethics; Bob Basow, creating
ads that sell; Jennifer Byrd, writing leads with impact; John
Hudnall, writing like the pros; and Heidi Fedak, the inverted
pyramid. Multicultural Scholars discussed what it is like
to attend the KU Journalism School as a minority student.
