A KU J-School student using
new media to tell her story

Journalism is an exciting and ever-changing profession that has evolved with the technological enhancements of the 21st century. In recent years, successful journalists have become multimedia experts, focusing on developing messages and stories for an array of media. We at the KU School of Journalism use a multidisciplinary cross-platform approach to prepare our students for successful careers in news and information, strategic communication and a blend of the two.

You will still find journalists and mass communicators working in traditional venues, such as newspapers, television stations, advertising and public relations agencies and corporate communications, but the growing trend in journalism is in the interactive digital world and in integrated communications. We still teach the basics of good journalism – research, writing, editing, critical thinking and creativity – what has changed is the way in which journalists and communicators tell their stories. The digital age of journalism makes for a fast-paced, exciting and rewarding career.

The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications is dedicated to preparing students to be successful in today’s journalism and mass communication industries. This education provides you with transferable skills that can be applied to various professions. We will teach you how to be a successful journalist in an array of professions, including interactive media, magazines, advertising and public relations.

An undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Kansas also serves as an excellent foundation for other career paths. For example, if you have aspirations of becoming a lawyer, earning an M.B.A. or pursuing an entrepreneurial enterprise, a journalism degree will help you reach those educational and professional goals.
