The Registrar's Office has placed the spring 2010 Timetable online, and enrollment appointments begin shortly after fall break.
1. Journalism courses that require "instructor permission"
The following journalism classes require instructor permission codes: Jour 288, 488, 506, 507, 508, 693.
2. In the past, Jour 502, International Journalism, has fulfilled the non-western culture requirement. However, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has not yet approved it for spring 2010. The decision will not be made until late November. If you need a non-western culture course in order to graduate in May 2010, you should enroll in a different “approved” one so your graduation will not be delayed.
3.Grad checks for students graduating in May 2010
If you plan to graduate in May 2010 and HAVE NOT ALREADY had a grad check, please make an appointment with the Journalism Advising and Records Office to complete required graduation forms and have a graduation check. We would like to complete all grad checks for tentative May grads by December 1. You must apply and have a grad check in order for your name to be on the official commencement list.
4. NOTE FOR STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION MAJORS GRADUATING IN DECEMBER 2010 (If you are a news and information major, you may disregard this.)
If you plan to take Jour 676, Strategic Campaigns, in fall 2010, please be sure you are enrolled in (or have completed) the three prerequisites:
- Jour 435, Message Development
- Jour 513, Principles of Advertising, or Jour 523, Principles of Public Relations.
- Jour 568, Marketing and Media Research
These prerequisites must be completed before Campaigns. Concurrent enrollment is not allowed.
5. Important note to students who are dually enrolled with CLAS and Journalism.
Please check "Enroll & Pay" to see if you have a "non-declared major" hold (NDC) placed by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. If you have this hold, you will not be able to enroll until it is removed.
If you have the NDC hold and are seeking a degree in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, you must officially declare your major. These are the steps: go to the department, meet with your department adviser, complete a major declaration form, take the signed form to CLAS Student Academic Services in 109 Strong
If you have the NDC hold and are no longer seeking a degree in CLAS (you are seeking only a journalism degree), complete the attached change-of-school form and bring it to the Journalism Advising Office in 201 Stauffer-Flint. You will be changing from being "dually enrolled in CLAS and Journalism" to "Journalism only." We will forward the form to the Registrar's Office for processing. Your hold will be removed when you are no longer dually enrolled.
Change of School Application Form
6. Note about the BUSINESS MINOR
The School of Business offers a minor in business. WHILE THIS IS AN EXCELLENT OPTION THAT STUDENTS MAY WISH TO CONSIDER, PLEASE REMEMBER THAT for a journalism student, a minor in Business is elective credit only.
Although it would be very valuable for you, the minor in Business does not fulfill any graduation requirement of the School of Journalism. For example, a journalism student may NOT change a minor in English or History or Coms for a minor in Business.
The distribution requirement for a journalism degree must be fulfilled by courses in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Courses in other "professional" schools such as Business or Education do not fulfill the distribution requirement.
The minor in business is elective credit only.
7. If you have questions about your spring schedule or your remaining requirements, please make an appointment with Lynne Tidwell or Scott Sponholtz in the Journalism Advising and Records Office. You may make the appointment online.
