ADVISING
Journalism Advising and Records
Office
201 Stauffer-Flint Hall, 864-7621
The Journalism Advising and Records Office advises both
pre-journalism and admitted journalism students concerning
admission and graduation requirements. The office assists
students in preparing a semester-by-semester graduation plan
at the time of admittance and provides graduation checks after
that, by appointment. Students are ultimately responsible
for meeting admission and graduation requirements. You should
consult with Lynne Tidwell or Scott Sponholtz in the Advising
and Records office for class selection and long-range academic
planning.
1) Make an admissions appointment after
being admitted to the J-School. Do this by signing up online
for an advising appointment. To make an appointment, click here for the reservation
system instructions (.pdf).
2) Complete a graduation check in the
semester prior to graduation by making an appointment with
the Journalism Advising and Records Office.
3) Open a KU e-mail account and check
it regularly throughout the semester.
4) Check the Web site for online advising
updates. We are working to increase both academic and career
advising notices on the J-School Web site. Please check it
regularly for helpful information.
University Advising Center
126 Strong Hall, 864-2834
The University Advising Center (UAC) provides assistance
to freshman pre-Journalism students.
FACULTY
MENTORING
Students admitted to the School are assigned
a faculty mentor in their area of interest. Faculty members
focus on such career advising issues as choosing electives,
planning study abroad, internships, etc. Students are required
to open a KU e-mail account and check it regularly throughout
the semester. This is how faculty and administration will
communicate with students.
Your faculty mentor will be in contact
with you through an e-mail list serve of his/her mentees.
You should expect an e-mail from your faculty mentor early
each semester announcing in-office appointment times within
the first six weeks of each semester. Your mentor will provide
directions on how to make an appointment -- if you want one.
By meeting with mentors early in the
semester, you may confirm your plans before building the next
semester's schedule. The e-mail list serve will also facilitate
e-mail mentoring, allowing your mentor to answer more precise
or limited questions for students who prefer an e-mail answer
to an office appointment. Mentors will also send out information
about elective opportunities, campus speakers or any other
opportunity the mentor finds to be of interest to students.
Contact the Journalism Advising and Records
Office with questions about who your mentor is, or if you
wish to request a change of assigned mentors (changes will
be made as staffing allows).
ENROLLMENT
As we state in advising documents and
in the KU catalog, "The primary responsibility for meeting
graduation requirements rests with the student." Online
enrollment makes that student responsibility unavoidable.
The advising/mentoring system will provide you with an excellent
planning and checking mechanism in the Advising and Records
Office, as well as wide-ranging mentoring opportunities with
faculty members.
In our student-centered environment,
serving students well is our primary concern. Online enrollment
is designed to give you, the student, the greatest personal
convenience and choice. The system also demands that you assume
responsibility for knowing the requirements and for finding
help early in the process when you need help.
For enrollment and other related-questions,
see these helpful KU Web
sites.
