Bridging the Gap: A Military Experience for Journalists

The Bridging the Gap: A Military Experience for Journalists intensive week-long workshop was held September 14-18, at Fort Leavenworth and Fort Riley.

The workshop was hosted by the J-School and the Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, and sponsored by a grant from the McCormick Foundation.

J-School professors Tom Volek and Barbara Barnett organized the event. Volek accompanied the 12 participating journalists, who were from around the country, at the workshop.

Some of the activities the journalists participated in included:

  • Overview of the Combined Arms Center and the Command and General Staff College
  • Military 101 training
  • Military Transition Teams meetings
  • Observation of military training, including a paintball exercise
  • Meeting with Joint Advanced Warfighting Studies (JAWS) officers
  • Attendance at a Battlefield Wellness Seminar
  • An “embed” with students in a Regional Strategic Studies class
  • A Garrison overview and panel discussion on “home-front” issues (medical care, PTSD)
  • A discussion with LTG William Caldwell, Commanding General of the Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth.
