Nearly 100 Kansas editors, publishers, current and retired
faculty, students and friends of the Journalism School attended
this year's Kansas Editors Day on Sept. 10. Kathleen Carroll,
executive editor and senior vice president of the Associated
Press, was the featured speaker.
Carroll spoke on the difficulties AP reporters and photographers
experienced while covering Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.
She praised their resourcefulness and said their coverage
showed what journalism can do to help people who are desperate
and in need.
Carroll was named executive editor of the AP in 2002 and
senior vice president in 2003. She returned to the AP after
six years with Knight Ridder where she was a bureau chief
supervising Knight Ridder's Washington coverage and its
overseas reporting. As the AP's executive editor, Carroll
helps the news agency face the challenges of helping newspapers
increase readership, as well as providing up-to-date reports
for broadcast and new media.
Also, at Editors Day, Lew Ferguson, retired Associated
Press bureau chief in Topeka and former member of the Kansas
Board of Regents, was recognized for his many contributions
in both fields by Paul Stevens, AP vice president, and Chancellor
Hemenway.
The program preceded the Kansas-Appalachian State football
game at 6 p.m in Memorial Stadium. KU Chancellor Robert
Hemenway hosted a pre-game buffet at his residence.
