In this advanced section, students will develop the maestro concept utilizing reporting teams. Schools should send a team of three students — a writer, a designer and a photographer — for this section. Students will create a prototype for their publication.

Leadership Seminar (Y, N)

This section is limited to students with yearbook or newspaper editorial responsibilities. Students will discuss leadership traits and create an editor’s notebook along with a style guide for their publication.

New Media
Bryan Wilcox (Kansas)
Students will create blogs and podcasts documenting KJI and other campus events and explore ways to drive traffic to their blog and learn what makes a good journalistic blog/podcast.

Newspaper Design
Tom Gayda (Indiana)
Students enrolled in this section will further their understanding of design concepts by redesigning their publications, converting to grid design. A basic understanding of newspaper design is assumed.

Yearbook Design

This section will emphasize design techniques and computer programs that enhance these techniques. Students will be expected to redesign their yearbooks.


Feature Writing (N, Y)

Student writers from newspaper, yearbook and broadcast staffs enrolled in this section will study feature writing techniques with emphasis on personality profiles, news-features, historical features and human interest features.

Sports Writing (N, Y)
Ryan Gunterman (Indiana)
With an emphasis on sports coverage and working with statistics, students enrolled will interview sports personalities on campus and study how to create a more inviting sports section for their publication.

Page and Section Editors (N, Y)
Timm Pilcher (Iowa)
Yearbook section editors and newspaper page editors will look at ways to improve their overall writing, editing and design skills. Students will also discuss their specific responsibilities as a page or editor on their school publication.

Photojournalism
Jim McCrossen (Kansas)
Students in this section will concentrate on newspaper and yearbook photojournalism utilizing digital equipment. Students will work on photo composition and how to master photoshop techniques. This is not a darkroom course. Students enrolled will need to bring their own digital cameras.

Journalistic Writing (N, Y)
Rod Howe (Nebraska)
Newspaper and yearbook staff writers will look at sources, attribution of those sources and the different genres associated with newspaper and yearbook writing. Students will also study headline and cutline writing along with news briefs and sidebar writing.
