Kansas Journalism Institute 2008
Sponsored by the William Allen White School of Journalism
June
15-19, 2008
Welcome to the 2008 Kansas Journalism Institute!
“You are what you say.” A week at the Kansas Journalism Institute will help drive that point home as we welcome nearly 200 participants from 10 states this summer. This, our 45th year, will bring these students to Lawrence June 15-19, 2008, to participate in one of the nation’s best-known summer journalism programs.
Led by a faculty of 12 nationally recognized high school journalism instructors from eight states, participants in the Kansas Journalism Institute will literally take over Stauffer-Flint Hall, home of the nationally acclaimed William Allen White School of Journalism.
KJI takes pride in preparing scholastic journalists to better meet the needs of their 2008-2009 school publications and broadcast outlets. Ten academic sections are offered to students and advisers: Publications practicum, Leadership seminar, New media, Newspaper design, Yearbook design, Feature writing, Page and section editors, Photojournalism, Journalistic writing and Sports writing.
KJI fees remain low and include living arrangements in a supervised university residence hall, meals, health care services and tuition. Students are supervised at all times by trained counselors, most of whom are either journalism majors at the University of Kansas or high school journalism teachers. Adult advisers direct dorm activities.
Extensive walking to and from classes will be required, so we encourage participants to bring comfortable walking shoes.
Thirty-five multicultural and need-based scholarships will be awarded, in order to add to the diversity of the group. To obtain a scholarship application, contact the KJI director. The deadline for multicultural scholarships is May 12, 2008. Only two scholarships per school, please.
KJI participants traveling by air should fly directly into Kansas City International Airport, just 45 minutes from campus. A local shuttle service offers frequent trips to campus. Reservations are necessary and may be made by calling Jeff’s Airport Shuttle (785) 749-9696. Greyhound, Jefferson Bus Line and Amtrak (800) 872-7245 provide service to Lawrence.
Students who become ill while at the Institute will be treated at Watkins Health Center on campus. This facility is available at no charge from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Other health care, including medications, x-rays, hospitalizations and treatment of pre-existing conditions, is provided at modest charges. However, family insurance coverage is strongly recommended
The deadline for registration to the Kansas Journalism Institute is May 16, 2008. |
