“At the J-School we do research that media
professionals are interested in. That makes us unique.” --
Tien Lee
“In terms of quality, KU (journalism)
students are the best. Everybody here really cares
about teaching and the students,” said Tien-Tsung
Lee, associate professor.
Lee’s opinion
draws from extensive experience with university journalism
programs both across the nation and internationally.
Lee
received his news-editorial diploma from the World
College of Journalism in Taipei, Taiwan. He then
went to the University of Oregon and received a journalism
degree with an emphasis in advertising. He went on to receive his M.A.
in mass communications from the University of Minnesota. He finished
at the University of Oregon with a Ph.D. in communication and society.
Lee
taught while attending the Universities of Oregon and
Minnesota. He has
also taught at Hawaii Pacific University in the Communication
Division and Washington State University, Edward R.
Murrow School of Communication.
Lee’s
advice for students is to “learn as many things
as you can. Have
exposure to all kinds of knowledge: statistics,
politics, and different cultures. Learn at least
two languages. (It is a) great experience to look at
the world in a different way.”
Lee has
authored or co-authored more than 40 conference papers,
two book chapters, and nine journal articles. He is
now working on a book on media, politics and Asian
Americans. He also freelances as a research consultant.
