“Get a good liberal arts education, possibly even a bachelor's degree in something like political science, history or economics. Work on writing!” — Dick Nelson

- Compiled by Brande N. Aleman

Dick Nelson can hardly remember a time he was not interested in journalism.

"I've been interested in broadcast journalism since I was 9," Nelson said.

Nelson works in the Dole Center as the newsroom coordinator for KUJH-TV. He said he chose to work for KU's School of Journalism because of its location, the faculty who teach in the School and the reputation of the J-School around the country.

Nelson said he believed the most important thing a student could gain from completing a sequence in broadcasting would be the ability to get a job.

"Hopefully, it would be a job that is intellectually and emotionally satisfying," Nelson said. "Their college education should also enrich their lives in other ways by expanding students' horizons and encouraging them to think."

As for freshmen who want to enter the J-School, Nelson said it is important for a student to get a broad education first.

"Get a good liberal arts education, possibly even a bachelor's degree in something like political science, history or economics," Nelson said. "Work on writing!"
