“Take advantage of campus media, study abroad
and internships. Ask us for help with networking
and referrals. We want you to succeed in
the classroom and beyond.” --Sara Gillham
Sara Gillham, recruitment
and retention coordinator and J-School graduate, enjoys
her work because it is a place where “everyone
is really passionate about what they do and wants to
come to work each day.”
After graduating,
Gillham worked in the KU Office of Admissions and
Scholarships. She
left KU briefly to work in recruitment for the University
of Phoenix, but returned to the J-School in order to
work with younger students.
“Everyone
who comes through my door and is interested in journalism
is a top priority for me," said Gillham. "It is my
goal to make the recruitment process a personal one
for both the prospective student and parent.”
As
a recent graduate, Gillham advices current students
to build relationships with faculty. “Our
faculty has real world experience that you (students)
can benefit from. They
work hard to have strong professional and personal
relationships with you--they truly want to know who
you are,” she said.
Gillham
enjoys informing prospective students about J-school
programs because they “are some of the
best. They truly have a multimedia focus which
makes our students very marketable.” She
emphasizes the importance of taking advantage of campus
media opportunities that are available from day one
at the university.
Gillham is working on her masters
from the University of Phoenix in business management.
