The
best thing about teaching isnt the money.
Teaching is about helping students realize, develop
and crystallize their creative potential - the
ability to create something that heretofore did
not exist. - Tim Bengtson
by
Sara Bost
Some
students find excuses to take the day off from classes
or to take "personal holidays." Students
in one of Tim Bengtson's classes are not so likely
to go on holiday. His classes are rumored to be fun
and entertaining to attend.
Students
say it's his love of the subject that makes his classes
so enjoyable. His classes are never just a lecture,
they are filled with real-life stories, jokes and
anecdotes. He makes a real effort to make class interesting
with guest speakers and challenging assignments.
But speakers and assignments aren't what make students
want to attend his classes; it's his wit and humor
on any given day.
The
drive to create
Bengtson
says he found his niche in journalism early on. He
loves advertising, he says, and likes the persuasiveness
of that aspect of journalism more than presenting
mere facts. He loves to toy with ideas for inventions
and takes pleasure in producing slogans. Bengtson
says he hasn't "made it rich" with an invention or
slogan yet, but he still jots down any ideas that
come his way.
A
winding road
Bengtson
was born in Michigan. He attended the University
of Michigan, where he received bachelor's and master's
degrees in business. He began teaching in 1965. He
taught at Southeast Missouri State University for
two years, the University of Minnesota for one year,
the University of Utah for four years and finally
KU, where he has taught for 23 years.
Bengtson
chose to come to KU after a visit to the campus.
He says he thought the campus was beautiful , and
he was in search of a greater commitment to advertising
than he had found at other universities. He found
what he was looking for at KU .
