The J-School maintains several media operations that serve
the information and entertainment needs of the KU campus,
Lawrence and the surrounding area. J-School students also
gain valuable experience working in these media-laboratory
operations.

University Daily Kansan & kansan.com:Students who work on the University Daily Kansan find themselves on a fast track to some of the nation’s leading multimedia news outlets. It is consistently ranked among the top college newspapers in the United States, and its reporters and advertising staff continue to win awards that prove they are among the best college journalists in the country. At kansan.com, the online version of the award-winning University Daily Kansan, students take stories to another level—multimedia. The Kansan also provides opportunities to work in advertising, design and online journalism. The advertising staff generates more than one million dollars a year in revenue to support the Kansan’s operation. Managed and operated by students, Kansan reporters work with KUJH-TV to deliver cutting-edge, innovative multimedia reporting.

KUJH-TV
& tv.ku.edu: KUJH-TV is available on Sunflower Broadband channel 31, with content online at kansan.com. Students interested in working in television find KUJH-TV the place to test their skills, producing the station’s daily newscasts and sports talk program. Each semester, the station produces other local programs, constantly expanding its coverage of sports, special events and documentaries. That means opportunities for on-camera talent, producers, directors and writers. Students have the opportunity to work with the latest software and technology. Broadcasting experience prepares students to work in the media world from all directions. Students work in all areas of production, advised and supervised by experienced faculty members.

Jayplay: Magazine students have the opportunity to work on a weekly lifestyle magazine called Jayplay, which is inserted in the University Daily Kansan. Students generate their own story ideas and have the opportunity to write longer, more in-depth pieces for the magazine, which covers such topics at nightlife and entertainment, health and relationships. Students also write an essay and one depth feature during the semester. Students learn by working with student editors, designers and photographers. Students receive individual coaching and written feedback on their work from the magazine course instructor.

KJHK
Radio: KJHK Radio, “KU’s sound alternative,” is available at 90.7 FM on the dial, or live online at kjhk.org. The station is run by the Kansas Union Programs Department, but journalism students contribute daily newscasts. All KU students are encouraged to participate at KJHK. Departments include programming, sports, news, promotions and production, just to name a few. It is not just one of the leading college stations in the country—KJHK was the first radio station in the world to broadcast a continuous live signal online, giving it a truly international presence. KJHK gives KU an independent voice and puts students at the forefront of radio technology. With its recent studio relocation and renovation in the Kansas Union, KJHK combines state-of-the-art technology with maximum accessibility and visibility, offering students a 21st century broadcast education.
