The J-School maintains several media operations that serve
the information and entertainment needs of the KU campus,
Lawrence and the surrounding area. J-School students also
gain valuable experience working in these media-laboratory
operations.
The
University Daily Kansan & kansan.com:
At kansan.com, the online version of the award-winning University
Daily Kansan, students take stories to another level--multimedia.
Students who work on the Kansan often find themselves
on a fast track to some of the nation's leading newspapers.
It's consistently ranked among the top college newspapers
in the United States, and its reporters continue to win awards
that prove they're among the best college journalists in the
country. The Kansan also provides opportunities to
work in advertising, design and online journalism. The Kansan
is managed and operated by students.
KUJH-TV
& tv.ku.edu:
Available on broadcast channel 14, Sunflower
Cable channel 31 and on the Internet. Students interested
in working in television find KUJH-TV the place to test their
skills, producing the station's daily newscast. Each semester,
the station produces other local programs, expanding its coverage
of sports and special events. That means opportunities for
on-camera talent, producers, directors and writers. KUJH-TV
also incorporates new technology, using a remote van and Internet
TV news at tv.ku.edu.
Broadcasting experience prepares students to attack the media
world from all directions. Students work in all areas of production,
advised and supervised by experienced faculty members.
Jayplay:
Magazine students have the opportunity to work on a weekly
lifestyle magazine called Jayplay, which is inserted in the
University Daily Kansan. Students write a department
of the magazine every two weeks, an essay and one long article
per semester. The magazine has a student editor, and the students
use their own ideas for stories and designs each week. Students
learn by working with artists, photographers and the magazine's
editor. Students receive individual coaching and written feedback
on their work from the magazine course instructor.
KJHK
Radio:
KJHK radio, KU's sound alternative, is available at 90.7 FM
on the dial, or live on the Internet. The station is run by
the Union Programs Department, but journalism students have
the opportunity to contribute daily newscasts. All KU students
are encouraged to participate at KJHK in one of the many departments.
Departments include programming, sports, news, promotions
and production, just to name a few. It's not just one of the
leading college stations in the country--KJHK was the first
radio station in the world to broadcast a continuous live
signal on the Internet, giving it a truly international presence.
KJHK gives the University an independent voice and puts students
at the forefront of radio technology.
