-Spring Semester (for Fall appointment) Feb. 1
-You may apply at any time prior to the deadline.

How to Apply:

2) Attach a résumé.

What’s Next?

GTA, GGA & GRA DEFINITIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

-According to the memorandum from the Provost to Deans, Directors and Chairpersons dated December 12, 2002, the terms of eligibility for GTAs became effective spring 2003 semester.

-The requirements are outlined in the Student Employment Handbook: (http://www.ku.edu/~kuh/students/SEPHandbook)

-The GTA Memorandum of Agreement can be found on the Provost’s Web site: (http://www.ku.edu/~provost)

Definitions:
-Currently the J-School offers 5 GTA positions and 2 GRA positions (under Peggy Kuhr’s grant). The dean created additional positions for titled graduate general assistants (GGAs). GTAs, GRAs, and GGAs have different benefits and different expectations.

-Benefits for GTAs include a stipend and tuition waivers; GRAs are paid a similar stipend, depending on the grant. GRA tuition is NOT paid, but GRAs qualify for in-state tuition. Both are .5 appointments and qualify for participation in health care benefits at KU. GGA appointments are hourly appointments, generally 10 hours per week and provide about $1,600 a semester. GGAs receive no tuition waivers or other benefits.

GTA/GRA Basic Requirements of The University of Kansas Graduate School:
1) You must be a degree-seeking graduate student.
2) You must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours required for the graduate degree in the fall and spring semesters. (GTAs don’t have to be enrolled in summer hours but GRAs do.)
3) You must be in good academic standing at the time of application (cumulative gpa of 3.0.) Provisional or probationary status is not considered good standing.
4) GRAs perform research in a grant holder’s field (or one closely related.)
5) GTAs’ assigned duties “must consist primarily of direct involvement in classroom or laboratory instruction in their own field of study or one that is closely related.”

GTA/GGA J-School Requirements:
1) You must meet all the above requirements of the Graduate School.
2) GTAs must participate in all KU GTA training (dates will be provided). Failure to attend training will constitute cause for dismissal.
3) All graduate assistants in the J-School are expected to attend and participate in periodic staff meetings. These sessions are announced in advance. If you cannot arrange your schedule to attend the meetings, you will not be eligible for appointment.
4) All assistants are reviewed each semester and continuation of the appointment is contingent on performance and funding availability.

GTA/GRA/GGA J-School Information:
1) You may apply at any time but see GTA/GGA application guidelines for details.
2) GGA positions, in addition, must be posted online. The J-School Grad office will notify you with specific information for this stage of the process.
3) All appointments will be for the academic year unless graduation dictates otherwise.
4) GTAs and GRAs and are expected to work 20 hours a week; GGAs usually work 10 hours per week. For both, there are periodic staff meetings included in the total time.
5) The Graduate Director, the needs of the School, and the performance of the student determine GTA and GGA appointments and their assignments to J-courses or School service centers (Resource Center, Career Center, the Bremner Editing Center).
6) The grant holder appoints GRAs. The grant holder also decides appointment renewal.
