Journalism Graduate Program Application and Admission

Admission Requirements

Admission is based primarily on the student’s undergraduate record, references, and results of the Graduate Record Examination. Applicants who have baccalaureate degrees in journalism, as well as those with no academic or professional background in journalism are eligible to apply for the News/Information or Strategic Communications courses of study. Applicants who have had professional experience must describe it in their applications to be evaluated for exemption from basic skills and professional course requirements.

Applicants for the Marketing Communications course of study (Edwards Campus) must have a minimum of two years of full-time professional employment in marketing communications or media-related fields.

Requirements:

  • Expected GPA: 3.0 or above
  • GRE: 75th percentile in verbal score (580), quantitative score (300) and 75th percentile in analytical writing score (4.5)
  • International students must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. TOEFL scores must be 25 and above, IELTS band score 5.5 and above and any score above 5.0 are required for admission.

Application Deadlines

Students may enter all courses of study (Marketing Communications, News/Information or Strategic Communications) in fall and spring semesters. The application deadline for fall is the preceding February 1; the application deadline for spring is the preceding November 1.

Application Materials

Applications are considered after these items have been submitted:

  1. A current resume submitted to the Graduate Records Coordinator as an email attachment.
  2. Completed application form, online at www.applyweb.com/apply/kugrad. This form includes the required written, one-page statement of the applicant’s academic and professional objectives.
  3. Nonrefundable application fee payable to the University of Kansas. See Admission in the General Information chapter of the catalog for more information.
  4. One official transcript of all college-level courses. (from each college attended)
  5. Scores on the Graduate Records Examination. Applicants for the Marketing Communications course of study may submit the Graduate Management Admissions Test. Joint MSJ/JD applicants must submit LSAT scores. Tests must have been taken within the last five years.
  6. Three letters of reference from persons familiar with the applicant’s abilities.
  7. International students whose native language is not English also must submit Test of English as a Foreign Language examination scores or International English Language Testing System examination scores.
  8. International students must submit proof that they have the financial resources to cover annual expenses.
